AN HISTORIC DISTRICT IN GRANT NEIGHBORHOOD?
Grant Neighborhod Association sponsored an informational meeting to gauge interest in creating an Historic District near the east side of the neighborhood. The area is bounded by Market, Capitol, D and Winter Streets. This area was selected as the initial study area after the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) used it as a sample area to educate others around the state on how to begin the application process. The meeting was held February 28th and was attended by about 45 neighbors. We began the process of learning what it takes to create an Historic District along with how it might affect residents. Four guests from other Salem Historic districts came to help answer our questions.
There is still much more information to be gathered and work to be done before any decisions will be voted on. The Neighborhood Association will continue to sponsor informational meetings. The next steps will be discussed at the March 6th Neighborhood meeting. Be sure to check back here often to learn about upcoming meetings.
2008 BEAUTIFICATION AWARD WINNERS
Each spring the Grant Neighborhood Executive Board brings forth a slate of nominations for its Beatification Awards. Some of the nominations are neighborhood properties that have been newly improved and cleaned up. Others are properties that have been well maintained over the years. Any property within the neighborhood is eligible to be nominated. The Executive Board evaluates the nominations and selects the winners, which are announced in the Spring Newsletter in late April. Framed award certificates, along with heartfelt expressions of appreciation, are presented at the Annual Spring Meeting on the first Thursday in May. Congratulations to this year's winners!
GRANT COMMUNITY SCHOOL / PARK PLAYGROUND
Grant Neighborhood Association assisted Grant Community School parents in their fundraising efforts in 2007. The result was the construction of this
brand new playground for all of the neighborhood to enjoy. In addition, drainage improvements were made and additional paved paths were added to the grounds of Grant Park/School.
